Mendo Excel
Turn Excel into an AI‑powered analytics tool your teams actually use.
Excel is the most-used productivity tool in your organization, and one of the least exploited with GenAI. Mendo Excel is a native Excel add-in that guides users through Copilot directly inside their own spreadsheets, with hands-on exercises and real-time detection of what they actually do.

Why Excel needs its own adoption surface
Copilot in Excel has the highest potential and the steepest learning curve in M365.
Copilot in Excel can summarize datasets, generate formulas in plain language, build charts, surface trends and reshape entire analyses. But the curve from “I opened Copilot once” to “I run my analyses with it” is the steepest of any Microsoft 365 app, because Excel itself is layered, and Copilot's value depends entirely on how the data is structured.

Mendo · teaches the structure that makes Copilot sharp
Three things that make Excel different
- 01
Data structure makes or breaks the experience.
A cluttered sheet returns vague answers. A clean Excel table returns sharp ones. Most users don't know how to bridge the gap.
- 02
Skill comes from doing, not from watching.
Tutorials and videos don't translate into using Copilot on your own spreadsheets. Skill comes from real practice on real data, with feedback in the moment.
- 03
Most users never reach the analytical use cases.
They stay on basic prompts. Formulas, trends, charts, pivot tables: the productivity unlock stays out of reach without structured guidance.
How Mendo connects to Excel
A native Excel add-in that lives next to your spreadsheet.
Mendo Excel is a standalone Excel add-in. Once installed, a Mendo tab appears in your Excel ribbon and a side panel opens next to your sheet, with interactive labs that guide users through Copilot directly inside their own data.

A native Excel add-in
Installed via a .msi installer, deployable through Intune, SCCM or your standard IT pipelines.
- 02
A side panel inside Excel
The Mendo tab in the ribbon opens a panel alongside the active spreadsheet, so guidance happens where the user actually works.
- 03
Hands-on exercises, detected in real time
Mendo detects what the user actually does in the sheet (formulas typed, charts created, prompts sent to Copilot) and validates each step.
- 04
Pilot usage and demonstrate ROI
Leadership sees how Copilot in Excel is used across teams, which spreadsheet use cases drive the most value, and what productivity gains look like in concrete terms.

Lab · Manipulate your data in Excel
Structure data so Copilot can read it
Most failed Copilot prompts in Excel come from poorly structured data. Mendo teaches the Ctrl+L Excel table reflex, a single header per column, no empty cells in the middle, properly typed dates and numbers. The foundation that makes everything else work.
- Ctrl+L tables
- One header per column
- No empty cells

Recognize Copilot's limits and reformulate
Users learn what Copilot does well, what it struggles with (multi-step reasoning, vague instructions), and how to reformulate when it misunderstands. The goal isn't blind reliance, it's confident supervision.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Licensing, installation, data, and how Mendo Excel fits with the rest of the Mendo stack.
Is Mendo Excel the same as Mendo Copilot 365?
No. Mendo offers three delivery products: Mendo Web (Chrome extension for AI chats on the web), Mendo Copilot 365 (desktop app injecting the Mendo widget into all Microsoft 365 apps: Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Mendo Excel (standalone Excel add-in). Mendo Excel is the right fit when Excel is your main GenAI adoption focus, or when you want a lightweight rollout limited to spreadsheet usage.
Do users need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license?
Yes. Copilot in Excel is a Microsoft feature and requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Pro license. Mendo Excel doesn't replace Copilot: it guides users through using it productively. Files also need to be stored in OneDrive or SharePoint with AutoSave enabled (a Microsoft prerequisite, not a Mendo one).
How is the add-in installed?
Mendo Excel is distributed as a standard Windows .msi installer. It can be deployed at scale through Intune, SCCM or any equivalent enterprise deployment tool. Once installed, the Mendo tab appears in the Excel ribbon and the side panel opens when activated.
What does Mendo see in my spreadsheets?
Mendo doesn't transmit document content, full Copilot conversations or sensitive data. During an active lab, Mendo's validation engine receives interaction data (specific actions taken in Excel, prompts sent to Copilot) for real-time verification. This data isn't stored. Only learning progress is synced with Mendo's servers.
How does Mendo Excel fit with Mendo Adoption?
Mendo Excel is one of the integration surfaces feeding into Mendo Adoption, the user-facing layer of the Mendo product stack. Adoption data captured in Excel sits alongside data from Copilot Chat, Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT and other surfaces, giving you a unified view of GenAI adoption across your organization.
Can it be deployed alongside Mendo Copilot 365?
Yes. Mendo Copilot 365 covers the full Microsoft 365 suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Mendo Excel is a lighter, Excel-only alternative for organizations that want to focus their initial rollout on spreadsheet usage. Both can coexist or be deployed sequentially.
